Family: Apocynaceae
Origin: Central and Southern Highlands of Madagascar
Common Names: Dwarf Pachypodium, Fat Pachy, Living Stone Pachypodium
Pachypodium brevicaule is one of the most unusual and highly prized caudiciform succulents in the world. Native to the high-elevation rocky plateaus of Madagascar, this dwarf species mimics the surrounding stones with its flattened, lumpy caudex and minimal upright growth. Its unique form gives it a “living rock” appearance, perfect for bonsai trays, rock gardens, or rare succulent collections.
What makes this plant even more desirable is its stunning yellow, daisy-like flowers, which bloom directly from the caudex — a surprising burst of color atop its otherwise stone-like base.
Size: Very compact — typically 5–10 cm tall, with a sprawling caudex that can reach 20–30 cm wide over many years
Caudex: Fat, knobby, and irregular; gray to olive-green with a rough, textured surface
Leaves: Tiny, dark green leaves that grow in tight clusters; deciduous during dry seasons
Flowers: Bright lemon-yellow, star-shaped flowers that emerge from the caudex in spring/summer
Growth Habit: Extremely slow-growing and low to the ground; often confused with rocks in its native habitat
Spines: Very short or nearly absent, especially in older specimens
